Inspired by turn of the century Mardi Gras Parades, every year the people of New York turn out in grand mermaid style to celebrate the Summer Soltice at the “Coney Island Mermaid Parade”!

An art parade, it brings hundreds of thousands of people to the amusement area in a single day.  Founded by Dick Zigun, the “Mayor of Coney Island” in 1983, according to the official website, the three goals of the Mermaid Parade are: bring mythology to life for local residents who live on streets named Mermaid and Neptune; create self-esteem in a district that is often disregarded as “entertainment”; and it let artistic New Yorkers find self-expression in public.”

Come out and see King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, previous years’ royalty have included Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Moby, Jackie “the Joke Man” Martling, David Byrne, Queen Latifah, Harvey Keitel and Hector Camacho Jr.  You can sign up to be a judge and receive an official Judge t-shirt, Review Stand Seating and best of all, it is totally acceptable to accept bribes from parading Merfolk!

This year the parade will take place on Saturday, June 20th, 2015.  Bring your tails and your scales and join in the fun!
